wont install from hdd or dvd

my computer recognises the dvd and can see the harddrive when installing but it just wont see the file that is there

It won't see what file? Are you refering to Windows? What distro of Linux are you using? How far did you get in the installation before you had a problem?

i am using fedora core 3
windows can see the files
i get upto the stage where you can download from a website or a ftp server or load a image from the hdd or run from the cd/dvd

So if I understand, you have Fedora Core 3 installation CDs or DVD and Fedora is not able to recognise your hard drive, maybe because it requires a special driver? Please describe your system: notebook computer or desktop, how old or what kind of processor, how big is your hard drive, and how is your hard drive connected: is it connected directly to the motherboard, or is it connected to an expansion card which is connected to the motherboard?

it is a pentium 4 2.2ghz with 256mb of ram
midi tower atx desktop
the first hdd is 18.6gb ntfs
the second hdd is the same size but in fat 32
both connected on the same ribon and in primary slot. connected by ide40

the both hdds are seen by anaconda.
the ftp search says for each of the cores 1,2 and 3 that this is not the same as the file tree. (i dont know what site it was downloaded from because a friend burnt it for me) i am running it off a dvd. windows wont let me download the whole .iso file to the hdd so i cant get the cds burnt
