Dolda, so for debian what if i use vesa? or i must get the proper video driver for rage 128 pro?
ok i will install debian tomorrow [ if i am able to install debian get the sound working then i will forget redhat and stick with debian. i already bought a thick 1000 pages " debian GNU/Linux unleashed " book. so will utilize that]

You can safely use VESA without having to worry about anything. The thing with the vesa driver is that, being a generic driver, it almost always works, but you don't get the performance of a real driver for the specific card. ATi cards are a bit tricky, though. Many of them don't have good Linux drivers, so if the performance doesn't bug you terribly, I'd say go with the vesa driver.
