Modem Problems
I have recently installed Linux Redhat 8. The kernel is 2.23 i believe. I found out that my modem was a win modem so i installed the neccsary drivers from http://www.heby.de/ltmodem. The modem at times starts uo ok but most of the time when i try to start it just freezes the whole machine and i have to restart it. Being new to Linux does anyone know what maybe causing it?

Winmodems cannot always be trusted. As the name hints, they're made to be used under Winbloze.
However, it might be that you're using an old kernel. 2.23 isn't the kernel version, though, or at least not in its entirety. Check what kernel you really have with the command "uname -r".
Your best option is still to get a real modem, though. They aren't that expensive nowadays. The only way you can be really sure that it is a real modem is to get an external modems. Real internal modems are rare nowadays.
