if anyone is using the genkernel method, I don't really recommend it.
I rewrote a fair portion of the gentoo install guide and described how to do an install using grp.
feel free to check it out, it is called "my gentoo linux guide" on the link below.
I also had no trouble whatsoever adding gentoo to an already pre-existing grub.conf file and it booted no problem.
try not to get too frustrated, overall the gentoo docs are quite good, but there are some errors and I am not why they are not fixed. If you use my guide in tandem with the gentoo install guide on their site, you shouldn't have any trouble getting a fully working system in gui in under 2 hours (using stage 3 - if you use the live cd's stage 3 is fine as long as you are using the appropriate live cd's for your architecture).
