Erm...what is the exact problem you are having puting linux on the laptop? if you get any error messages could you post them?

my problem is that i cant boot from a CD.

Okay, check that you've burnt the cd as an iso image and if you have you need to enter the BIOS and select the cd drive to boot before the hard drive.

i cant, the laptop is so old it wont boot from a CD, only 3 1/2 " Floppys

Okay, you could try a distro that comes on floppies such as mulinux or blueflopps, or your laptop might let you do a network install of another distro.

ditto that, get a minimal distro from floppy and use that to install any other distro that you like, gentoo has a tarball install, so you could get that working with this method...also checkout the damnsmalllinux site, it can be run and installed from floppies, and is only around 50mb, it performs really well on older hardware...

If it only boots from floppy, use damnsmalllinux, there are many types of installation, like poorman's ( floppy booting), give it a look, it is really good for old computers.
