I have just installed redhat 9 (a clean install not a dual boot system)
I thought it might be badblocks but I do not know for sure does anyone have any ideas or have they seen this before. I dont want to go back to MSFT but I may have to.

Boot up the system in singelusermode and execute tune2fs -c on the filesystems to write the badblocks bad. Then linux will understand not to use thoose blocks anymore which can prevent your lockups.
