Windows media files? Are you referring to avi, asf, wmf, etc.? Anyhow, mplayer can probably play them. See http://www.mplayerhq.hu/

Yeah, but I thought that they were used so little that he was probably referring to something else. I'm not sure if mplayer can play wmf files, though. Does anyone else know?

well if you are missing dependencies install them. RPM will give you a nice output like "blah blah depends on glibc >= 2.2.5" or something like that. This is when you go to rpmfind.net and type in the dependency. type in glibc (in this example) and look for the one that comes with RedHat 8. It will almost always find it. If not, google for it.

It's not such a great idea installing mplayer from a RPM, though. The mplayer guys themselves don't do binary distributions, since that doesn't give you all the system-specific optimizations that you get when compiling from source.

and because of that mplayer rpm's are way behind in versions so you may be getting an old version with problems that have been fixed.

actually I noticed they started distributing an RPM version on their homepage. But you are right, compile it, it works much better.
