I know this may sound strange but you need gcc to compile gcc.
Anyway, whay are you trying to install gcc on a firewall box? you can just compile whatever program you want on another linux computer and just copy it over to the Smoothwall box.
And don't double post.Life is complex, it has a real part and an imaginary part.

Smoothwall is not a distribution. It turns an old PC into a firewall appliance - you're not intended to modify the Linux installation, and it comes with no tools to do so.

Like Roxoff said, Smoothwall is just a firewall with just these tools which come with it. I have also used Smoothwall, and I have to say it sucks if you want any flexibility and features. For example when using Smoothwall via SSH, there weren't all necessary programs such as my favourite editor nano (using joe was like living in hell). I solved the problem by installing ordinary Debian on that box and then manually set up iptables and anything other (of course there weren't nice graphs and the user-interface, but flexibility and advanced features totally compensate lack of these). Now I am happy with my solution, it works fine and I can totally control my system.

Perhaps there is a reason you are so desperate to do this? There is a commercial version of smoothwall that you can purchase that contains extra stuff, and more flexibility. If you need to build stuff for the smoothwall platform, maybe you should talk to the guys on the smoothwall team first, they might value your help.Linux user #126863 - see http://linuxcounter.net/
