Mandrake 9.2 hangs on install + hardware problem (fixed)
I had Mandrake 9.1 on this computer before, and it ran beautifully. I am installing the latest Mandrake 9.2 now, with a full install (start off clean from the damage I have done before, lol). After I format the partitions the setup hangs for about 4-5 minutes then an error is displayed, I am in windows on the same PC right now, and forget exactly hat it says, but its something about disks...
I also have an even bigger problem...When I reboot, the beginning BIOS just hangs with COMPAQ (i know its crap anyway
) sitting there for about 2 minutes (thats unusually long) and then it does the usual thing...except the CD-ROM is never loaded...thees nothing doen to CD-ROM. Even in boot or whatever, its like theres no power going to the CD-ROM drive. Its internal drive, and I never touched anything with the CD-ROM inside, but its not working...unles if the BIOS don't boot it, really affect it. Even if I manually slide in and out the tray, it does nothing.
I am desperate for some input!
Thanks in advance

I also just realized, that my external CD-RW (USB0 drive also isn't working with the system...but thats on external power, and when i hit button, it opens. The internal CD-ROm, does nothing even if I hit button.

It would help if you could write down the error message...
You don't happen to have a LG cdrom do you?

The CD-ROM, I am unsure of, just came with the computer (COMAPQ...6 years old). And I cannot write down the error message now because I am unable to get into the install. The CD-ROM does not work. None of the internal or external drives work (CD, CD-RW, ZIP), except floppy. I tried the Win98 boot disk with CD-ROm support, and it cannot detect the CD-ROM either. I'm thinking perhaps it is just its time to meet my trash.

Alright, I have fixed the CD-ROM, it must have just been its time to go, and replaced it with another and all works well now.
Now, since I know Mandrake 9.1 works with no problems on this machine, I'll just use that. Hopefully all goes well.

ALL INSTALLING MANDRAKE 9.2 BEWARE! I had that Compaq CD-ROM listed on here and it became toast after trying to install it
The following is from www.linuxquestions.org ( http://linuxquestions.org/questions/...hreadid=108472 )
Warning. Mandrake 9.2 can destroy your LG CDROM Drive. Read the following
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[
Error scenario: Installing 9.2 and being told unable to install the base system and subsequent reboot reveals that CD-ROM drive is physically dead.
Why: According to LG Electronics, their ODD (Optical Disc Drive) products do not support Linux nor do they test with Linux. Unfortunately, many Dell computers (possibly others) come with these CD-ROM drives.
Solution: Currently there is no solution or work-around for this issue; it is still under investigation. Damage occurs even when doing a network install. At this point, please do not install Mandrake Linux 9.2 on any computer containing a LG-based CD-ROM drive or it will damage your CD-ROM drive! We are actively looking for a solution to this problem.
