this is the message i recieved in redhat linux 8.0 when i compile a new kernel version 2.6.0
the previous version was 2.4.18-14...

do you get the error while mounting a filesystem...if your root partition is ext3, your kernel may not be configured with built-in ext3 support.

did you get the panic at the point where the initrd is being loaded?
If so, make sure that you have a loopback device configired in your kernel. Or, simply do without an initrd (that works as well).
