    Open a terminal and type
    tar -xf archive.tar

    for using tar, also type tar --help in a terminal

    btw: Why do you use such an old and obsolete distro like RedHat 9? It ain't supported anymore afaik. For newer distros, check e.g. www.distrowatch.com
