are you building the portage tree for the initial install or are you just trying to update the portage tree?
if it's the former, then, yes, it can take a while..
if the latter, i've noticed that some of the servers in the rsync rotation are a bit slower than others.. i usually just ^C out of the sync and restart it to get a different server.. but it can take a few mins to update the tree.... it really depends upon the length of time between syncs.Their code will be beautiful, even if their desks are buried in 3 feet of crap. - esr

I am building it for the initial installation.....figured I would give Gentoo a shot.

Gentoo is great once you get your CFLAGS and USE flags how you want them.. be sure to check make.globals for USE flags that you don't want.. put a corresponding -<flag> in your make.conf to turn them off.. you should *never* edit make.globals
Their code will be beautiful, even if their desks are buried in 3 feet of crap. - esr
