Please help me !
I would like to install SuSE 8.2 on a COMPAQ PRESARIO 5000.
The installer report the following messages:

Suse 8.2 install on Compaq Presario 5000

I would like to install SuSE 8.2 on a COMPAQ PRESARIO 5000.
The installer report the following messages:

Does linux not work on this hardware ? I m totally new in linux. I m discouraged. How to solve the problem ?

going by the amount of VIA hardware on that board i would guess it runs a VIA chipset, which i know are supported coz im using a VIA based motherboard on this comp.
the compaq dvd drive i would guess is the problem, going by the i/o errors, i would say ietehr ur drive has problems or ur cd is scratched/faulty download

Where are you getting that message that you posted as 'at booting'? Is it booting the CD or the actual installed distro? Can you give a little more info about how far along you got in the installer, etc.?

During the installation process the installer identifyed the packages what it couldn't unpack and asked what
to do: Ignore Abandon.
I chose Ignore.
All other packages was unpacked successfully.
At the end of the installation process I checked the log.
It contained the mentioned error messages.
I took out the Linux installer CD and restarted my PC.
It has booted from the hard disc.
The boot ended in the error message:
Kernel panic: VSF; Unable to mount root fs on 03:42
