Maybe try a vintage version of slackware?
You can look at www.slackware.com/get for older distro's
Good luck

just a suggestion, if you're just playing, rather than trying to do serious work on the venerable PC, have a look at BeOS on the www.bebits.com site. Okay, it's not Linux, but then it's not Windows either and great fun.
have fun

Use Suse 10.1 and occasionally play with Kubuntu
Also have Windows 98SE and BeOS

Well, it's MAIN use will be to act as a web server, but a secondary use may be to play around wiv!
I tried installin SuSE 9.0 over the internet (my bro reckoned it'd b ok) but it came up wiv LOADS of errors sayin couldn't find /dev/<pretty much everything i think> if i booted off floppy, then it would not find the floppy when i need to put the network modules disk in!
If i booted off CD, it would not even get that far!
The spec is a P166 and 16Mb Ram (as said above) with a 2.62Gb Hard disk and 4x CD-Rom
Any ideas?"I am not an alcoholic, alcoholics go to meetings"

gentoo's right out if you only have 16mb of RAM.. the reason being is that it needs at least 64mb for the initrd and RAM to compile with.. one of the best places to look for linux distros is http://www.distrowatch.org... they have ~256 different linux distros listed.. the main ones are there, and they have lots of specialized distros, also.
Their code will be beautiful, even if their desks are buried in 3 feet of crap. - esr
