Most likely a hardware problem. Any more details?
Error messages?

the system does not shutdown gracefully i.e. it just shuts off as though someone removed the power cable.

after that when i try to start it using the power button it does not for a few minutes.

the instalation reaches about halfway when installing the packages

it is an assembled PC.installed from a CD.its not a retail version.

thanx

Why? Redhat 9 is very old. Is there a particular reason you're not trying to install something newer such as Fedora Core 5 or CentOS 4.3?

Is your system connected to a UPS(battery back up)?
It might be the problem
