    One final word on this thread in case anyone else hits the same problem. I decided to fiddle around with grub and I think there *might* be enough files on there to actually install it. It's just that I messed a few things up while I was experimenting, and I reinstalled Knoppix. When the installer prompted me to install Lilo (I know... I know, but it said that before, and then went and booted into a grub prompt) this time it really *did* install Lilo!!!

    Well, it's sorted out now. I think the Knoppix installer has a bug somewhere, or else it can sense your mood and has some way to sort things out

    It was fun doing the above, but cost me a couple of very late nights!
