FC5 install hangs trying to start X

hi,
FC5 install hangs after trying to start X. this is the error shown

Waiting for X server to start... log located in /tmp/ramfs/X.log
1...2...3...4...5... X server started successfully
_X11TransSocketINETConnect() can't get address for localhost:6001: Temporary
failure in name resolution
(mini-wn:597):Gtk-WARNING**:cannot open display:1

my system configuration is

Intel Pentium D 2.66Ghz
ASUS P5RD1-VM motherboard (integrated graphics card ATi X300 - but i don't use this)
1GB 400Mhz DDR RAM
ATI X550 graphics card
160 IDE HDD
Monitor Samsung 794MG

i was able to install in text mode and configure X as root but again unable to do the same for other users

I'm actually having the same problem with FC 6 and I really wish someone could provide a solution.
