Hi, Is there a way i can re-install windows xp without blowing the MBR? or can i back it up and restore it after reinstalling windows?

when you install windows it will mess with the MBR, even if you don't want it to....
The good news is that in most distro cds there is a rescue option that allows you to install just the bootloader (on the MBR, if it's the case)

yeah you will have no way around getting past the point that windows will mess with the mbr. but if you create a boot disk from your linux install you can jst boot into linux and reinstall your bootloader to the MBR and it will be all working again
