im assuming redhat 8?
Try using the display manager under X windows to probe for your monitor/video card type
also, try going to ati's site and downloading their driversmajorwoo

generic displays
i have tried using red had on my compaq presario 700, which is somewhat similar. the best monitor to choose is the Generic high frequecy SVGA 1024x768 at 70 Hz. a big problem you might find that you have is that if your laptop is acpi based linux will not work quite right with your power management.
