I would highly recommend you
not use 64-bit Linux at this time.

Most 32-bit apps will work just fine in 64-bit Linux. In fact, usually at least a handful of applications installed by default on a 64-bit Linux distribution
are 32-bit. You're likely to run into trouble with Java, Flash, and WINE however. This is mentioned in my link above.
