As to why Ubuntu is recommended for beginners? Well that's up to the person recommending it. I personally don't recommend any distribution over another simply because one "beginner" isn't the same as all beginners. Some folks prefer to dive in with a "do everything yourself" approach and some like a smooth transition with tools that look and feel similar to MS Windows. It all depends on the person.
All major Linux distributions have the same abilities. They can all run the same software and perform pretty much the same exact way on common hardware configurations. Don't choose a distribution based on whether or not it can run XXX or YYY program; they all can. If you like Blender, Ubuntu can run Blender. So can Fedora Core, Mandriva, openSuSE, or Debian. The difference in all these is the presentation, not the underlying features.Registered Linux user #270181
