Trying to put Linux on an HP Pavilian
I have an HP Pavilian xe742, and when I try to put Linux on it, it won't download from the CD on booting. It keeps going to the Hard drive and attempting to start up Windows ME that isn't working right. I have checked the set up by doing an F1 to set up, but can;'t find any setting that would allow it to boot from the CD. Any suggestions?

Hi casawyer,
does F1 allow you to enter in BIOS? did you look for 'first boot device' option in BIOS? it must be set to 'CD Drive'. what about other installation CDs? try to boot from Window Installation CD. check from which media machine boots up by default. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Yeah, check the boot list. Also on my HP you can press Esc on boot up (while the HP symbol is shown) and it'll show the boot list, so you can scroll down and select CD-ROM. It is possible that you burned it incorrectly, and it is not bootable, but I would try that first.
