scsi + ide drive setup query
I have inherited a system which did have w98 on a 8gb scsi hd.
I've added an extra 20gb IDE hd. This is setup on the secondary IDE channel as a slave.
I've checked the BIOS and the new IDE hd is showing on secondary IDE as a slave. The boot order is as it used to be - the scsi hd 1st then cdrom.
When I try and install RH9, I go to manually partition and delete all the existing partitions of the old scsi hd. Then I go to setup boot partition on the scsi hd. I'm doing this as I believe it should be faster at boot.
The problem is although I assign the boot partition to the scsi hd, when I go back to the screen, it has been assigned to the IDE hd.
Why would this be?
Should I boot and run fdisk /mbr? I don't see why this would have an effect as the mbr would be on the scsi hd anyway as it has the previuos installation.
thanks

as you create partitions in the RH9 partition maker, it moves the other partitions round. look at all the tick boxes in the dialog box. something in there will make sure everything stays as is.

thanks for the tip - I'll have a look tonight. I do recall seeing some boxes about which drives are available - perhaps I should create the basic ones first and then create the other ones (eg /home) on the larger disk?

Well I managed to do the partitioning fine by just selecting the checkbox for the disk I wanted to install the partition(s) on but ran into problems after the installtion:
error: no operating system found
so I'll have to do a little bit of research on that.

It sounds like your installation didn't install a boot loader. You can use the floppy you created to get into your system and install one, or you can use one of those LiveCD's to get in and install one. Either way, you're not going to get anywhere with out installing lilo or grub (I'd suggest lilo, but that's just my pref).
Good Luck!
