um, can you be a bit more specific. What do you mean by "switched desktops"? Did you use a login manager and change which window manager you're using? Did you manually fix an X Server file to load it by itself?

He might be talking about the Window Manager.. i guess he might have gone to FailSafe Mode...

Is the Xserver still loading ?
If the Xserver's still running at boot. Then it might be as simple as your session info settings at the graphical login promp.
If not, then you're probably running in failsafe mode...
Without much info it's hard to be of help.
