Now that's strange... would you mind posting your GRUB config as well as a description of what partitions you're using?

machine boots using lilo... will use knoppix later to get lilo.conf. partitions are as follows
/boot hda 150mb
swap space hda 700mb
/ hdb 2000mbCry out for freedom! Cry out for Linux!

I'm not sure here, but would I be guessing correctly if I were to say that you used different partitions than the last time you installed RH9?
I'm guessing that it has with disk labels to do (why, oh, why, does RedHat still use disk labels?!), and if that is the case, it's very possible to solve, but I'll need to know the exact partitions you installed everything on, not just on what hard drives.
