Apacer handydrive and linux?

Hi all,

I would like to use my Apacer handydrive (USB memory stick) on RedHat 8.0.
I have searched the RedHat site and www.google.nl/linux for information regarding this thingy, but to no avail.

Has anyone had any experience with USB memorydrives and Linux?
I would like to hear about it.

I've gotten mine to work, but it's not really straightforward. First, check if this mem stick is a device compatible with the USB mass storage protocol. Do that by running "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices, find your device's name on an "S:" line, then check the "I:" line closest below and post what it says here.

cat /proc/usb/devices says the follwing on the I line:

If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=usb-storage

It also recognises the device being an Apacer Handydrive

It is using the USB Mass Storage protocol. That means all is fine, and you may proceed.
The USB Mass Storage layer is a bit complicated in Linux in that it uses a SCSI emulation layer. That means that you will access your USB memory like a SCSI drive, and that also requires some extra kernel modules. I've gotten mine to work, but it was some time ago, and I'm not sure if this will be entirely accurate.

mount /dev/sd0 /mnt/usb

dev was not /sd0, but sda1 though
