I have reformated an used win95 hard drive so I could install a mepis linux operating system on it. When I try to install the disk it boots and starts to load to a point and then it has a kernal panic attack. I'm stuck and I can't figugure out how to installl. Thanks fvs :?
Have you used the mepis disk before on another computer without any problems? If you have just burnt the disk, did you check the md5sums of the disk to see that it is not corrupted?
Bought this Disk from Mepis, I used it befofre on my new machine it was working, I bought a used machine pent3 193mb 20gig hd, I don't think its the machine I think I need help with the install bootable disk don't know how to get it going, Need step by step help. Thanks for reply. fvs
I don't know about Mepis, but some distros such as Mandrake allow you to create a boot floppy which points to the correct kernel image to use and the like. I would suggest you try and create a boot floppy for mepis if it is possible.
The reason being that some older systems contain cdroms which don't allow them to boot from cd even though that option is present in the bios.
is your hard drive a SATA drive... i had problems with that when i installed gentoo
Did you make sure the computer worked with Win95?
Where did you buy this computer?
If you haven't done so already, you might try using some of the cheatcodes that are available when the CD first starts (F-key options).
How are you trying to install?
Are you trying to install Mepis from the boot prompt?
I have found that the easiest way to install Mepis is to let it boot to a desktop. Mepis is a livecd, so it will do this.
Then just click on the "Install to Hard drive" icon.
Answer the questions that it asks you.
Hello to all that replied,
I could get mepis as a boot off of CD, but when I tried to use install now, I couldn't get past the select partition part, I selected 2500mb and its going on a 20gig hard drive so I thought that was enough, however it took me back so I selected auto and that wasn't good either, I gave up and installed SUSE 9.3
without a bit of trouble. I'm just learning and I seem to stumble alot.
OK, Thanks everyone, If anybody knows why I couldn't auto select from the mepis install I would like to know.
PS I'm wondering if I can install mepis on that 20gig along side of suse? so I can decide which I find more user friendly.
