Dial up internet (yes I have an external modem)

I just went out and bought a external modem so I can run Linux on my main computer however I've read many other posts and searched with google but can not find how to set up an internet connection (maybe I'm not searching hard enough) I've found many places have said go to system tools and then Internet configuration however I can't find this option anywhere I don't seem to have an Internet configuration option. I'm using Ubuntu 5.04 with a gnome desktop preferably however even if I get instructions for a KDE Desktop I will be very greatful. My external modem plugs into a USB port does this matter as everything I've seen refers to a serial modem if so I will have to take it back and change it.

It's been a while since I've run Gnome, but I think Gnome PPP will work for that.

I checked out the link and that confused me just as much as I am now this is what it read

1. Read General Notes
2. Read How to add extra repositories?
3.
sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp
4. Read How to refresh GNOME panel?
5. Applications -> Internet -> GNOME PPP

So my understanding of what this is saying is that you type
sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp
into the comand line then go to Applications, Internet, GNOME PPP
and that I'm assuming brings up properties for your internet connection
is this correct just making sure before I reboot my computer back to Linux

I don't run Gnome, but that sounds correct. You need to install Gnome PPP if it's not already installed with sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp, then you start the program to setup your dialup stuff. Once that's done, you should be able click an icon that will start your connection anytime you want to go online.
