Getting monitors to work
Hello
I have JAMD linux installed on my PC. I would like to use it at something higher than 800x600. The card is an Nvidia GeForce 4600.
Someone told me that I need to download the "source" in order to make this work. What exactly do they mean? I'm totally confused, as I am a VERY new user.
If I'm totally off on this, please advise and offer suggestions.
Thanks,

The "source" refers to the source code. However, you won't need that here. It is strange that it didn't detect it by itself, though. The nVidia drivers usually do that.
Do this: start any text editor and open the file /etc/X11/XF86Config, look for a "Screen" section, and inside that a "Display" section. Then look for the Modes line in that Display section, and post here what it says on that line.

Display settings
Here's the text. The reason it goes beyond 800x600 is because I re-installed linux this morning and used settings for a card that is similar to the one I have. (I have an Albatron Ti4600).
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection
What do I do now?
Thanks

So, it seems that it's discarding those modes for you. Look up the file /var/log/XFree86.0.log and send it to me; it's too long to be in a single post. I'll put it up on my HTTP server for everyone to see.
You can either mail it to me (address at the bottom of the post) or you can connect anonymously to my FTP server (ftp://dolda2000.com/) and upload it to the "incoming" directory.

I just uploaded via FTP
I just uploaded the doc via FTP per your instructions.
Please let me know if anything comes up!

may i recomend another Distro? like mandrake or redhat? :-?

Here it is:

The hsync frequency range seems suspiciously narrow, so it can have been misdetected. What monitor (manufacturer and model, preferrably an URL to its product page if you can provide one) do you have?
-
Here's the model
It's a bit obscure, but it works well with my Mac and WinXP Pro.
Is there something I need to change in that text document to get it to work? The monitor goes higher, but I only need to use it at 1600x1200.
Thanks,

Probably, the DDC probing doesn't work correctly for whatever reason. I'll need to know what monitor it is to be able to find out the solution. In the meantime, can you send me the file /etc/X11/XF86Config as well?

I have 4 of them. They are great screens.
