Hard disk space

Why do both Fedora and SuSE insist on having 20+Gb of hard disk space available before they will install, whereas Solaris manages to struggle by with 3Gb? (About the same as the other two actually manage to occupy once installed.) Sure you will need space for data files, and perhaps additional software, but how much you allow for that should be up to you, shouldn't it?

Fedora and SuSe never asks for 20+ GB space. i installed both. 8GB each. you can install Fedora Core 6 in around 6 GB and SuSe in 5 GB of disk space.

Not on my computer they won't. I let SuSe have its way, and then used Acronis Disk Director to shrink its partition after installation.

That's your problem. The default install for SuSE greatly exaggerates the amount of space needed, particularly for SWAP. You can work just fine with SuSE or Fedora in around 6-8GB with a maximum of 512MB for swap.
