good morning
i want to install mandrake 8.2 on my pc. however, the
only thing that stresses me is the partition. i have the software
partition magic 8.0 but i don't know how i make a partition using it.
can anybody help me or at least link me to a tutorial ,where i will be guided?
firstly, mandrake 8.2 is rather old (abotu 2 1/2 years?) so u might want to consider a newer version to ensure hardware compatibility.
second, u need 3 partitions. a linux swap partition which shoudl be about twice the amount of ram u have. second u need a / paertition, this shoudl be formatted to ext3. (ext2 will also work fine but lacks some recovery/stabiility features) this partition should be somewhere aroudn 3-4 gig. (mine is 3.9 and i prob should have made it about 500mb bigger, but u dotn need mroe than 5 gig here) then u need another ext2/3 partition for /home. this shoudl be at least 500mb IMO, and should really be at bigger than 2-3 gig, but is really dependant on how much stuff u plan to save. remeber ocne setting up all ur software u will probably have a few megs of config files in here so dont make it too small.
im not sure how to use partition magic, but once u have those partitions set up any madrake isntall will go fine.

i remember partition magic 7 did not work with windows XP.
I had to work with partition magic 8...i had to rack my brains to finally know that version 7 is incompatible with xp.
make sure you know which version u r using and your windows os type.

fortunately, my os is windows xp and the partition magic that
i downloaded is 8.0 version, which is the newest version.
If you get the latest Mandrake version, you won't even need Partition Magic, since Mandrake nowadays comes with a program that allows you to resize NTFS partitions from within the installation program. Just defrag your drive before, since that program won't be able to resize the partition to less than the position of the last fragment.
so what you are trying to say is that i should download mandrake 9.2,

Precisely. Mandrake 9.2 has an option in that part that allows you to do mostly everything that Partition Magic would allow you to do. And, Mandrake 9.2 is several years more recent than Mandrake 8.2, so you might want to get it just for that reason.
