I am complete new at Linux. I have been using Red Hat Linux for 3 days now. I want to install gaim but i have absolutely no clue how. I don't know nothing of the technical stuff and linux commands. I checked the official gaim webpage but couldn't seem to find an installation walkthrough. If someone can tell me what exactly what i need to download and how to install it i would be very gratefull. I am using Red hat 8.0 with no other software installed than the ones i installed during my desktop installation.
Thanks in advance!
shouldnt it already be installed...im not sure about redhat but do ctrl-F2 and type gaim in the command window...
you mean alt-f2 and then type gaim
but you will likely have an older than hell version that sucks and doesn't support yahoo messenger clients
see my guide on how to install it
if you want a possible quick fix then go here:
and install the second file down called:
by doing this: rpm -ivh gtkspell-2.0.4-fr3.1.i386.rpm
in your terminal
then go here:
and get the top file called:
and install it by doing this:
rpm -Uvh gaim-0.64-1.i386.rpm
(the U means it will replace the old version with the new one)
if you get an error saying that there is no old version (gaim is needed by gaim-0.64-1.i386.rpm) then that likely means it is not installed and then you do this instead:
rpm -ivh gaim-0.64-1.i386.rpm
I have the version of gaim that comes with RH9. How do I get it to work?
I assume I have to create an account on some website or something but I can't find any info.
well, if you settle for using that one, some of the accounts won't work cuz they have made lots of changes since then which is why I gave you the clear instructions on how to upgrade.
else, you have to create accounts in it for it to work, and for an older version like that you might have to load the appropriate plugins
