Kubuntu - configure: error

I am facing the same problem on Linux Ugntu 6.06, to load a software using ./configure gives an error
configure:error:no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

also
sudo apt-get install gcc
and
build-essential
doesnot work. what should I do?
please help.

I tried this command sudo apt-get install build-essential as suggested by you. Does it update from the live internet as it shows an error for connecting to Index of /. I have dual boot OS one Windows XP and other Linux Ubuntu 6.06. My dial up internet connection is working on windows XP, I tried for connection on Linux but it doesnot detect the modem. What should I do ?

Please let me know the steps to be followed for making internet connection through Linux Ubuntu.

you can install build-essential package from Installation CD too.
