so i have a inspiron 3500 and i need to get some kind of linux on there, its driving me nuts. im fairly sure it has 195mb ram and no idea as to hdd size or what ghz but i cant have windows 98 on there anymore. booting from usb is out of the question, it doesnt read dvds and i have 0 cds to make a livecd. any thoughts or is this an iced over up-hill battle
Pull the Hardrive. Use a IDE adapter to hook up to a working computer. Boot up a Puppy 4.31 (lots of Puppy puplets made with that version). Boot up a live Puppy CD on working computer. Go into Gparted and make a swap partition of about 512MB or 712MB. Format the rest as Ext2 or Ext3 file system (flag it as boot) & Install (I would choose a frugal install) to removed Laptop IDE drive attatched to adapter.
Don't save when prompted at shutdown.

I had Puppy 5.0 installed on a P3 500, also had AntiX 8.5 on that system, both worked fine.
