No /dev/lirc, how to get one?

There is no /dev/lirc or /dev/lirc/0 or anything resembling lirc in /dev. There is a /dev/lircd. lirc is the linux infra-red remote thing. Am running udev, is it called?

says there is no /dev/lirc. I know I should give more information but am a bit confused. It is entirely possible I am using the wrong lirc modules or they have incorrect options. Any suggestions? TIA.

If you are using fedora/redhat/centos linux, is lirc rpm installed on hosts ?

Thanks, Using Debian Etch AMD64. The lirc package is installed allright.

As I say there is a lircd device but nothing recognisable as a lirc device.
