time synchronization

hi evryone
i want to synchronize my system time with gps reciever(laipac instrument with nmea 0183 standard) time for linux server ,when i am connecting the device through rs232 its reading an unformatted data ,should i have any drivers for accesing the data like nmea drivers or sometinh else if anyone know pls help me as i am new to linux and its very urgent pls help me.
