printk does not output in the /var/log/messages

    Hi all,

I'm running kernel 2.6.15.7. When I compile the kernel with no debugging in Kernel Hacking option from make menuconfig, I see the log output in /var/log/messages coming from the various functions defined in kernel code. (e.g. - arch/i386/kernel/setup.c) . However, when I compile the kernel with debugging support I don't see those message be shown. For each case I can see the output from device driver.

I even tried with the kernel parameter debug and removing quiet.

When I see the debug enabled kernel output I can see one line after the kernel loads which I don't see when the debug disabled kernel loads -
    hotplug: tty seq=1973 HOME=/ PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin ACTION=add DEVPATH=/class/tty/ttyc5 SUBSYSTEM=tty

I've been trying this for several days but could not make through.

Here's part the .config file -

Where are these "printk" statements located?

"If the priority is less than int console_loglevel, the message is printed on your current terminal. If both syslogd and klogd are running, then the message will also get appended to /var/log/messages, whether it got printed to the console or not. We use a high priority, like KERN_ALERT, to make sure the printk() messages get printed to your console rather than just logged to your logfile. When you write real modules, you'll want to use priorities that are meaningful for the situation at hand."
