    Those versions you mention are older than ancient!!
    Do you have a university project or something similar??

    The kernel is now version 2.30 and GCC 4.4.

    For sake of truth. Linux is 2.6 now. Odd numbers (e. g. 2.5) are for development versions, even for releases.

    2.6 is too large, not good for learning

    And 2.6.31 is under development.
