kernel 2.4.20-6 to 2.4.20-8

Hi,
I installed the kernel 2.4.20-8. But it seems it's not installed properly. As when I try to uninstalled it, .. says that .. its not installed .... and when i try to install it again... says that its already installed... I am a newbie in Linux.. and am totally lost. help would be apprieciated...

error: package kernel-source-2.4.20-8.i386.rpm is not installed
[root@localhost downloads]# rpm -iv kernel-source-2.4.20-8.i386.rpm
Preparing packages for installation...
        package kernel-source-2.4.20-8 is already installed

PS:in the makefile i have extraversion as -8
