    Syslinux Kernel Booting

I've been spending several hours trying to get this to work and I'm probably missing something.

Downloaded linux kernel, compiled a 1.5mb kernel BzImage

    formatted a USB
    Installed syslinux
    Installed mbr

    moved BzImage into USB
    made syslinux.cfg

    TIMEOUT 20
    PROMPT 5
    DEFAULT LINUX
    LABEL LINUX
    KERNEL bzImage

Reboot - Boot from USB - get error

    No filesystem could mount root
    kernel panic - not syncing

    any ideas?
