How to run my application on a panel

Hi all,
In my application i have created one popup menu when i run the application it will popup the menu. Now what i want is i want my application to run on the panel and will popup when ever i click on the icon in the panel like application and actions in linux. How can i do that.
I wanted this to be done through shell script or through make file not manually by right clicking on the panel and add the application to the panel. And whenever the system reboots the icon must be there.

So.... what do yo need exactly? your app. still running and a docklect (like gaim... it is running but it is iconified on panel) or simply create a shortcut on the panel?
