automatic hardware detection
I want to understand how the various linux distributions automatically detect hardware when the OS installs. Take the case of my FC3 machine. When i do cat /proc/cpuinfo I get the correct cpu type as AMD semptron. But when I try to compile the kernel fedora kernel (linux 2.6.17), I don't see AMD Semptron in the processor options .
Does the linux installer take help of any utility for guessing the correct hardware.
Does the installer mainitain precompiled kernels for insertion into the OS or does it compile the kernel while installation?
There must be some script in the installer to do all this hardware checking. Is this script available after the OS is installed?
