Building kernel for new distro

I'm working on a new distro by using Lilnux From Scratch, and am creating the kernel now. What should I include in this kernel? The box I am doing this on is not the box the distro will be installed on to when I finish.

Is there some program I could include in the installation process that would detect hardware, and add the neccesary components to the kernel?

Nope, what you can do is compile most of the stuff as modules (not the basics, like IDE support and such).

I hope I'm not replying too late to this. I found this thread while doing a search.

PCLinuxOS has excellent hardware detection. You could check their source code for this. They are here - http://www.pclinuxos.com/news.php
This should give you some idea of what is needed, if not the program code you need.

Can you tell me how you started with this Distro. AS even I'm trying my own distro for a Billing and Bandwidth Management software, and have no clue about the way to start.

and look it over. On the downloads page, you'll find three editions of PCLOS, MiniMe, Junior and Big Daddy. MiniMe is a small download and is the most personally configurable. Once you've added the programs that you want, you can run 'mklivecd' to remaster your own version.
Synaptic (the icon looks like a rubics cube. :mrgreen: ) has around 5,000 apps. These are easily installed. If you need an app that isn't in the repository, you can build your own RPMs (at your own risk -- ). There is a 'how-to' in the September issue of PCLinuxOS magazine which is available in Synaptic or from here --

If you choose to build packages yourself, you may want to google for tutorials on RPM packaging.
