Making 100% sure i can boot into old and new kernel

Hello.

Im going to try and compile and run the 2.6.10 kernel some time today. Im a bit puzzled at how i can definitely boot into the old kernel using lilo.

From what I have read before I rename the old vmlinuz, Systemmap and config to e.g. vmlinuz.old etc and change my lilo.conf. Am i right in saying the old bzimage will be in vmlinuz.old?

So changing lilo.conf too:

image = /boot/vmlinuz.old
etc
etc

Would boot back into the old kernel?

The thing that puzzles me is how does it know which Systemmap and config to use?
