forgot root password

Hi all,
i am a new user.this is my first letter,
my problem is i forgot my root pass word.i have another user in my system.i loged in using that account.i try tochange my root password by enter in single user mode.its ok.no problem till.but when i reboot system and login as root,i cant enter.and i cant configure my system to LAN because of this problem(dnt know root paswd).how can i solve this problem.but when i change the the user passwd (not root) nothig wrong.it change.but cant change root password.

friend the problem is that i enter in single user mod and change the password using "passwd" command.But when i reboot the system the logon screen appear.the user name(my name ) is listed left side.i change the user name and type try to enter as "root". but message appear fail to login.

Are you trying to login to the gui as root?
This is normally disabled by default.
There is a file that you can edit, I will see if I can find it if it important.

If that's what you are trying to do, I agree totally with budman7 and think you should leave the root account disabled.

The biggest mistake you can make in Linux is to create a really bad habit of logging in as the root user. I've not logged in as root user for at least the last 4 years now, and have not needed to do so. You can take care of administrative tasks by simply su'ing to root.

See man su.

easy in the console window type in su super user which makes you a root for a short time than type in passwd root and type in 2 times.
