If I run Knoppix from the hard drive
| No, don't do that! Knoppix is not meant to be run from the hard drive: it is a live cd, and that's it! If you want to install Linux on your hard drive, better go for Ubuntu to start with. When you get real experience, you might want to consider Slackware, which is more command-line than GUI based. However, as bigtomrodney has just said, any Linux distribution will run from the command line. In fact, Unix systems originally didn't have GUI and so it is possible to do absolutely anything with the command line in Linux.
