Knoppix 5.0 will not let me copy to a Seagate FreeAgent, help please

Hi all,
my laptop lost all of the user profiles along with the admin profile when a friend tried to network it, i'm trying to use knoppix 5.0 to copy everything over to my external HD which is a seagate freeagent Go. when i plug it in i get a pop up screen that says,

could not mount device
the reported error was:
couldn't mount device '/dev/sda1': operation not supported
windows did not shut down properly. try to mount volume in windows, shut down and try again.
mount failed

but my problem is that i can't install it properly on a guest user account because i don't have administrator rights.

occasionaly it recognises the seagate and opens it but just wont let me copy anything to it.

cheers,
J
