No Connectivity

I posted a help message earlier (My Network Adaptor is not recognised). Thanks for the replies but both suggestions related to updating the driver of my net adaptor and reassurance that my adaptor was within the kernal. I updated the driver but still no connectivity. Now I know it's not my cable modem because I took my laptop to a friend's house and his cable modem didn't work either. This has left me completely mystified. Any more ideas?

could you clarify please, is it not connecting through the IP address, or is it because of the ethernet port? thanks
