screen resolution and software question

hi i have two questions...

im am running knoppix 3.7 live cd.
i want to know how and where i can change the screen size, i have a 15.4" wide screen on my laptop, but i only get like a 14" in the middle with black on both sides! how and where can i change this??

My second questions is: When i get onto my hd1 drive i have some programes on there that are on my xp os. how can i run and istall any of these programms on knoppix?
there is this software called WINE that came pre-installed with the live cd, but everytime i try to run a .exe it tells me Wine is still in the developmnt stages and cannot work... etc...

where i can change the screen size,
at boot----- knoppix screen=XXXXxXXXX
or
If you would like to edit your X-Server configuration manually
(/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 for XFree86 V4.x), use "knoppix 2" to boot
into runlevel 2 (textmode only) and, after changing the X
configuration, start the X environment with "init 5". Note that
you can always leave the graphical environment with "init 2", and
restart it later with "init 5".
