Knoppix 3.8 live cd, internet connection very slow

im running knoppix 3.8 live cd on an old machine of mine. It runs great, everything works, but the internet is very slow loading pages. I was using firefox, then i tried konqueror and it was slow also.

I had the same problem with suse 9.2 when i installed it on my other pc. I had to edit the modprobe.conf file and turn off the ipv6. That worked great, so I tried it in knoppix, but all the lines having to do with ipv6 were commented out. Also, how does the user thing work on a live cd, are you the root user when it loads, or is there a trick there.

Im using a dsl connection thru a switch,
PC Specs:
AMD 950 T-bird
288mb ram
